A'Muse: Stay Current on Legal Research

This semester, the Law Library will be hosting a Wednesday afternoon series to help you stay up-to-date on the best research tools and search strategies. Librarians will be demonstrating features of HeinOnline and Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals at 4 p.m. in L30 on Wednesday, September 26. Hein is more than just law reviews – it provides access to many historical and government documents. Learn how to effectively use its search tools and other features.

Refreshments will be provided. Students, faculty, and all members of the law school community are welcome.

UK Research: Justis Now Available

The Law Library has recently added the Justis database to offer its patrons full-text access to all United Kingdom legislation in force or repealed from 1235 to the present, as well as cases from 1163 to the present. Full-text statutory instruments, setting out detailed provisions under the authority of the enabling Acts of Parliament, are also searchable in Justis. These documents are available as pdf files and cover from 1674 to present. In addition, searchable articles in Justis contain press releases and announcements from most of the major government departments in England and Scotland, with coverage beginning in 1998. Contact a Reference Librarian at (804) 289-8685 if you need assistance using Justis.

A companion to Justis, JustCite is a multi-jurisdictional citator and legal search engine, which provides seamless links through the full-text material of numerous other data suppliers' platforms, including Justis, LexisNexis, and Westlaw. Other features include the ability to identify the leading case in seconds considering the relationships between cases, not just keyword frequency; marking up the specific effects of cases, so you know whether those cases are still "good law"; and showing how legislation has been amended and applied in court. Contact a Reference Librarian at (804) 289-8685 if you need assistance using JustCite.

Trial Database: PolicyFile

The Law Library is currently running a trial of a new resource called PolicyFile, from now until October 12, 2012. The database provides information on both sides of a public policy debate. Users get immediate access to over 386 think tanks, research organizations, and advocacy groups including the Hoover Institution, International Monetary Fund, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, RAND Corporation, and the World Bank. Indexes, abstracts, and links directly to current research on virtually every public policy issue--domestic and international are provided. The database has over 106,000 records and is updated weekly, with more than 50 percent of the abstracts linking directly to the full text research reports and studies.

Please send any feedback to the Digital Resources Librarian, Amy O'Connor, at aoconno2@richmond.edu.
